THE
CITY GALLERY ART Nikola R. Vasic Translated |
The Salon of ULUU presents the permanent occurrence in artistic life of the city according to its determination to be the review of the current creativity production in every field of fine and applied arts, always at the end of the year with, once and for all, established rules of artists class-right to take part in it. In this way the Association provide high reputation to the Salon as elite institution and determine relative high level of exposed works, because the exhibitors could exclusively be the artists who have received their degrees from the Schools, in other words The Academies of fine or applied arts or the artists who have proved their talents for such a high rank by verification through the membership of ULUS or ULUPUDS. And what kind of elite do we really have? Have the artists of Uzice put enough effort and to what extent they succeeded in keeping up with chronology of European and world artistic events, at least those that have left deeper impression on domestic artistic stage? Is it, again, enough pure keeping up with pluralism of contemporary poetic direction to provide the quality? Are high reputations, that some individuals enjoy in the eyes of the citizens, reasonable? It is not easy to ascend the pedestal of the elite, and harder to stay, exist, last on it... According to the propositions emphasized in the invitations sent to the artists, it is underlined that the participants of this year' s Salon can participate with mostly three works, and the jury will decide which works will be presented on the exhibition. However, this could become neither the criterion nor the picture of success of the participants on this exhibition because a lot of artists decided themselves to participate with only one or two works. This year, the invitations are sent not only to the artists from Uzice, but to the artists from the wider area-territory of the District (Arilje, Pozega, Bajina Basta, Nova Varos, Priboj). The general impression is great melange, which, besides the quality and thematic pluralism, results from the representation almost all branches of fine and applied arts and the diversity of the techniques in which the works are realized. The conglomerate of individual temperaments and various sensitivities, which are very distinguish among themselves according to different sources of inspiration, iconography and stylistic determinations, usage of art elements, ways of composition, structuralism of plastic layer of the painting, usage of symbols, are presented. The particular curiosity of the Salon presents the fact that trinomial jury, which consists of the two eminent painters from Belgrade and one art-historian, in spite of convincing majority of painters in regard to other exhibitors, haven't awarded any prize for painting.
The first award has won Dragan Jovicevic, from Pozega, for the work in bas-relief realized in combined technique wood-metal, titled "The moment after". From the extreme unusual point of observation which means great mastery in regard of perspective abbreviation, hardly attainable even on a drawing, powerful and convincing work, full of vital force and energy, has been realized. Aware of difficult task, he compensated the lack of perspective abbreviation with very suggestive and witty witticism, putting the bodies of loving couple between two sides of iron bed. Only the artist of exceptional talent, playing with similar subjects, succeeds not to slip into banality.
The second award has won Mladen Jevdjovic for the Set design for the 6th Yugoslav Theatre Festival realized in offset print which includes: the Poster, informative poster, the set of tickets for the Festival, the Program of the Festival - 32 pages and the Formal charter award of the festival. This work characterizes brilliant idea, clear message and very high level of professionalism.
The third award has won Biljana Ugren Kovacevic for the composition "With a head", which consists of three female nudes in the technque - baked clay. Concerning these figures, the contrast and subtle passing between too-dimensional, monumental lower part of the torso and considerable minimized, much indented up to the waist part of the body, is very interesting. Really, the symbiosis of the opposites between artistic metaphor and mere rhetoric is very effective. It is worthy to mention the applicants from the close choice for the awards: Vladan Terzic, Dusan Starcevic and Zoran Matic. Finally, we should acclaim the decisions of the management of the Association that the Salon has to become the regional review of artistic creativity and to be endorsed in the future. But, there won't be much benefit from moral support, and it wouldn't be good to return to the usual custom. |
